In 16th century Italy, in the midst of the “Renaissance” while the arts flourished, the legendary and highly regarded court chefs of Catherine de Medici of Florence were the very first to add a touch of milk to fresh fruit and wine water ices (‘sorbetto” which had been known to exist as early as 600 B.C.in China). The result was an incredibly smooth and creamy, light and refreshing, frozen dairy-based delicacy with intense, rich flavor. It was called "gelato".
GELATI-DA® is a true re-creation of THE WORLD'S ORIGINAL ICE CREAM® that has been Italy’s/Europe’s favorite frozen dessert for over 475 years. Whereas the first gelato was created circa 1533 A.D. in Florence, Italy, GELATI-DA was created in 1985, by David Cannon in his gelateria (Italian ice cream parlor) located on the Downtown Skyway Level of Donaldsons Dept. Store at City Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. DAVID’s GELATI has since closed but the centuries-old, trade secret recipes live on through GELATI-DA.
The custom flavor systems used in our super premium-quality "gelati" (plural of gelato--meaning many flavors) are imported from the finest Italian confectionery and flavor houses as well as sources in Tahiti, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Columbia, Canada and the USA. These select ingredients are then blended with fresh milk (containing less than 2% milk fat), pure cane, beet and low dextrose corn sugar, along with all natural stabilizers/emulsifiers to create the smooth texture, rich/vibrant flavor release and refreshingly unique taste experience that only the finest "world class" artisan-made gelati possesses.
