In 16th century Italy, in the midst of the “Renaissance” all of the arts (including culinary arts) flourished. Regarded as the best in all of Europe, the court chefs of Catherine de Medici of Florence were the first to add just a “touch” of milk to fresh fruit and wine water ices (‘sorbetto” which had been known to exist as early as 600 B.C. in China). The result was an incredibly smooth and creamy, lighter and refreshing, frozen dairy-based delicacy with intensly rich flavor and a clean finish. Italians called it "gelato".
GELATI-DA® is the true re-creation of THE WORLD'S ORIGINAL ICE CREAM® recipes that have been passed on to worthy, highly experienced gelato masters over the centuries. GELATI-DA is proud to carry on the tradition of offering America, Italy's and Europe’s favorite frozen dessert for over 480 years. Whereas the first gelato was created around 1533 A.D. in Florence, Italy, GELATI-DA was created in 1985, by David Cannon in his gelateria (Italian ice cream parlor). DAVID's GELATI opened in April 1982, was located on the Skyway Level of Donaldsons Dept. Store at City Center in Downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota USA. DAVID’s GELATI has since closed but the trade secret recipes live on through David Cannon and GELATI-DA.
The custom flavor systems used in our ultra premium-quality "gelati" (plural of gelato--meaning many flavors) are imported from the finest Italian confectionery and flavor houses as well as sources in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Columbia, Germany, The Netherlands, Tahiti and the USA. These select and pure ingredients are then blended with fresh milk (containing less than 2% milk fat), pure cane and beet sugar, low dextrose corn sugar (no HFCS), along with all natural stabilizers / emulsifiers create the smooth texture, rich / quick flavor release and delivers a refreshingly unique taste experience that only the finest "world class" artisan-made gelati possess.
